Hello Beauty Lovers!
I’m just gonna go right out there and say it- I LOVE beauty subscription boxes. They give you the opportunity to sample so may different products at a reasonable cost. Although I’ve had my fair share of uninspiring samples, I’ve also come across products that I would have never discovered otherwise. But the large varieties of beauty box subscriptions can be overwhelming- how are you supposed to pick one?!
Since I have tried a few different boxes, I thought I would start sharing the contents of my absolute favorite- the Sephora Play! box. Rather than simply sharing what came in my box each month, I will also share reviews of each individual product. Whether you get the box yourself or not, you can get an honest opinion of the products included.
Here’s a little more info on the Sephora PLAY! box:
The box comes with 5 deluxe samples, one perfume sample, and a 50 bonus-point card that can be redeemed in-store with any purchase. It costs $10/month, including shipping. Sephora customizes your box based on the answers you fill out on their questionnaire about your skin, hair, and make-up preferences, dislikes, and concerns. This can be updated at any time if these things change.
One of the best things about this box is that its entirely made up from products sold at Sephora. Considering the high price point of most of the products carried by Sephora, it allows me to sample a wide variety of high-end products for a fairly low cost. You will occasionally receive Sephora brand samples as well, but in my experience, these samples are generously sized, and excellent products.
My July 2017 box included the following products:
IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara (Full size 0.3 oz @ $24) Sample 0.1 oz, value ~$8.00 **exact volume not listed, this is estimated**
Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask (Full Size 5oz @ $52- Sample 1 oz, value ~$10.40)
Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture Dream Come True Wonderful Deep Conditioning Mask (Full size 6oz @ $32- Sample 1.25 oz, value ~$6.67)
Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Contour Balm in Whoppin’ Watermelon (Full size 0.1 oz @ $17- Sample 0.04 oz, value ~$6.80)
REN Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream (Full size 1.7oz @ $45- Sample 0.5 oz, value ~$13.26)
Guerlain (Fragrance) Mon Guerlain (Full size 1oz @ $66- Sample 0.02 oz, Value ~$1.33)
Total Box Value: $46.46… Not bad!
In-Depth Product Reviews:
IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara: I LOVED this when I put it on. It does a great job separating the lashes, while still giving them volume and thickness. I would definitely consider this more of a lengthening than volumizing mascara, but this is definitely one of the best mascaras I have tried. This is also a cruelty free product. The one downside I will mention, is that the mascara does start to have “fall-out” or crumble a teeny bit in my under-eye area after 8 hours or so. I would definitely still purchase this in the future.
Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask: Sooooo, I may have cheated this review a little bit. I already own a set of masks from PTR, so I had already tried this mask before receiving it this month in my PLAY box. The good news is, I absolutely LOVE this mask. In the set I own from PTR, this was by far my favorite mask- and Chris actually agreed with me. We have very different skin types, but we both love it. I was pumped when I opened this month’s box and found a very generous sample size inside! This is another item I would definitely consider purchasing in the future.
Madam C.J. Walker Hair Mask: I kind of hate to be negative nancy over here, but this was definitely my least favorite product in this month’s box. The mask wasn’t “bad”, but there were several things about it that annoyed me. The first thing that threw me for a loop was the amount of time you are instructed to leave the mask on- 15 minutes. Seriously, 15 minutes?? What on earth am I supposed to do in the shower for 15 minutes?? On top of that, the mask was insanely heavily scented. I don’t mind a scent to my hair products, but if they make me nauseous while I am using them, I start to worry a little. Of course, if this product turned my hair into the most soft, hydrated, bouncy hair I’ve ever had, I could get over it…but it didn’t. So this was a definite “pass” for me.
REN Evercalm Day Cream: This is arguably the best selling product from the company. REN prides itself on being a cruelty free, vegan, “non-toxic”, as well as safe for the most sensitive skin. The company includes a laundry list of ingredients that are NEVER included in their products. If you suffer from redness or sensitivity, this product was designed for you. My biggest issue with this particular product is that it is marketed specifically as a “day cream” but doesn’t include any SPF. To truly protect skin from aging and sun damage, a daytime moisturizer should be formulated with at least SPF 20. This product was fine, but nothing special.
Clinique Chubby Stick (watermelon): This sample was a little lackluster. I’m probably not the only person out there who has tons and tons of lip products, but if you are anything like me, this will end up forgotten at the bottom of a drawer, purse or backpack. Don’t get me wrong, it is NOT a bad product. It is a very sheer, moisturizing formula, but I’m the type of person who wears full-on pigmented lipstick, or chapstick/lip treatment. There really is no in-between for me. I’ll be passing this sample on to a friend.
Guerlain perfume (Mon Guerlain): This scent was wonderful! It is a fresh, floral and feminine fragrance. It’s key notes are Jasmine, Lavender and Vanilla. If you enjoy Viva la Juicy, or YSL Mon Paris, you would also probably enjoy this.
I hope you found these reviews helpful or interesting. I just got a shipping notification for the Sephora PLAY! August box, and I can’t wait to test out all the new products!
Do you get Sephora PLAY! or any other subscription boxes?
Until next time,
